about me

bettina patermo

grew up in the monotony of the upper austrian suburban idyll, and painting became my refuge at an early age. my passion for bold colors probably stems from my sicilian roots. i soon dropped out of my first degree at the linz university of art because of narrow-minded teaching methods. four years later, my path finally led me to the academy of fine arts in vienna.

studied at the academy of fine arts in vienna.

master class in graphic arts with gunter damisch.

master class in art in public spaces with hubert schmalix, diploma (2000).

lives and works in vienna and styria.

my work aesthetics

the central characteristic of all my works is their two-dimensionality. i do not play with light or shadow to create spatiality. my images are dominated by interrelated colored surfaces, which, in combination with the lines, become carriers of meaning.

why the shift toward abstract art?

the major issues of recent years (pandemic, war, climate change) have triggered a radical change in me. my initial paralysis in this nightmare scenario has given way to a furious frenzy and the urge for spontaneous expression – an expressive approach to acrylic paints on canvas.

what drives me

i am only truly happy in my studio. the creative process itself is the most satisfying activity for me. and it gives me great pleasure when my paintings give viewers space and inspiration for their own imaginations.
